Acid Reflux: The Digestive System Disease

Nearly everyone has a digestive problem, but many people develop these diseases because of lifestyle, poor diet and lack of physical activity. The digestive system is the corridor by which food and drink enters the stomach. This passage is the esophagus, which is part of the digestive tract that consists of the stomach and other muscles that aid in the breakdown of food. Once the food reaches the stomach it releases acid and pepsin as part of the digestion process. Heartburn or acid reflux is a common digestive disease that irritates the esophagus because of acid that backs up from the stomach. When the esophagus fails, stomach acid can seep back into it. This is known as acid reflux or heartburn.

The leading symptom of this disease is a burning sensation in the digestive tract. Other symptoms are the presence of acid in the mouth, hoarseness and chest pain. Severe indications of acid reflux are serious and cause respiratory problems, such as constant coughing and feeling out of breath. Prolong acid in this area can be damaging. Acid reflux or heartburn can happen to anyone, including infants and children. Even though infants are otherwise healthy, they can develop acid reflux due to an immature digestive system. However, most infants grow out of the disease by the time they are one year old. In older children, the causes are often the same as those in adults. When anything causes the muscular valve between the stomach and esophagus to relax, or increased pressure below the esophagus, can cause acid reflux. Heartburn or acid reflux is common during pregnancy because of increased hormone levels and pressure in the stomach. Certain other factors may also cause acid reflux, including obesity, overeating, certain foods, some beverages and specific medications. Some natural remedies for treating or curing acid reflux are sustaining a normal body weight, avoiding strenuous exercise immediately after eating, maintaining good posture, eliminating alcohol and nicotine, scheduling meals several hours before bedtime and maintaining a healthy diet. Avoid fatty and fried foods which are hard to digest and limit chocolate, coffee and others beverages that produce high levels of acid in the stomach.

The esophagus and stomach, the first part of the intestines, is called the GI tract or digestive tract. This area can be compromised by esophageal cancer or peptic ulcers, which can result from tumors in portions of the digestive tract that is exposed to acid and pepsin. Symptoms of esophageal cancer include difficulty when swallowing, weight loss, pain in the chest, coughing, hoarseness, indigestion and heartburn. Some factors that increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer are use of nicotine, excessive drinking of alcohol and acid reflux. Certain groups, including men, the elderly and African-Americans, are at greater risk for esophageal cancer. Ulcers can be caused by infection, use of painkillers and drugs such as aspirin and other prescription drugs.

Other diseases associated with the digestive system are liver disease, stomach cancer and colon cancer. Liver disease is the destruction of liver tissue over time. One particular type of liver disease is fibrosis of the liver. This disease is usually caused by drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Colon cancer is the result of a high fat diet and cancer of the stomach is known as gastric cancer, a malignant tumor on the lining of the stomach. The exact cause of stomach cancer is unknown, but factors such as male gender, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, a diet high in salt, smoked or preserved foods and nicotine can increase the risk of the disease. This common type of stomach cancer can be cured if found and treated at an early stage. Fiber is a powerful weapon against cancer. It improves overall health by moving wastes faster through the digestive tract. This gives toxic wastes less time to come into contact with intestinal cells. Good sources of fibers are whole-grain cereals and breads, prunes, berries, fresh fruits, vegetables and brown rice. Recently, studies suggested that calcium and vitamin D not only strengthen bones, but also fight off colon cancer. High sources of calcium are found in dairy products, sardines and dark green leafy vegetables. Vitamin D are found in salmon and fortified cow's milk. Most of your food nutritional sources should come from plants.

There is a variety of treatments for these diseases such as over the counter medications, prescriptions, at home medicines, lifestyle and even surgery. Treating these diseases depends on its cause. While these are remedies for the symptoms, the best and safest way to treat diseases of the digestive system is by prevention. Eliminate what is causing the problems such as an unhealthy diet, smoking, drinking alcohol or using aspirin and other painkillers. Proper nutrition and diet can improve and even help to prevent many diseases, including esophageal and liver cancers. Dietary fat is one of the biggest causes of digestive diseases and other health problems. Dietary fats and trans fat must be avoided, along with products like margarine, packaged baked goods, fast food, prepared foods, chips and crackers. Make sure your nutrients come from the food you eat rather than from supplements.

You will know that your condition is serious when symptoms are interfering with your sleep and daily activities. It is wise to seek medical help. Your physician will talk to you about your lifestyle and take tests of the digestive tract. Digestive diseases can cause severe damage to your health, make sure that the doctor knows all the symptoms that you are experiencing and if you are taking any over the counter medication. Prevention of digestive diseases is the best treatment and can help you maintain a normal lifestyle. Consult your doctor and other health organizations on further treatment and prevention of digestive diseases.

Yeast Probiotics - Health Benefits

Probiotics are living microorganisms which are beneficial to health when consumed. The benefits to health attributed to bacterial probiotics have been described (Reference: Lactobacillus Molecular Biology: From Genomics to Probiotics ISBN: 978-1-904455-41-7). Several preparations containing probiotic yeast cells are commercially available. The beneficial effects of strains of yeast such as Saccharomyces boulardii are well documented. Probiotic yeast cells provide nutritive value and are generally resistant to passage through the stomach and intestine. In addition they are resistant to most antibiotics so they can be used in patients receiving antibiotic therapy. A recent review about the effects of Saccharomyces boulardii on gastrointestinal diseases was published in the journal Current Issues in Molecular Biology. (Zanello et al Curr. Issues. Mol. Biol. 11: 47-58)

Health benefits attributed to probiotics include the treatment and the prevention of gastrointestinal diseases, vaginal and urinary infections and allergies. The yeast Saccharomyces boulardii has been described as a biotherapeutic agent since several clinical trials displayed its beneficial effects in the prevention and the treatment of intestinal infections and in the maintenance of inflammatory bowel disease.

All these diseases are characterized by acute diarrhoea. Administration of the yeast in combination or not with an antibiotic therapy was shown to decrease significantly the duration and the frequency of diarrhoea. Experimental studies elucidated partially the molecular mechanisms that helped improve the health of the patient. The discovery of its anti-inflammatory and immuno-modulatory activities in correlation with the advances in the understanding of mucosal immunology opens a new field of perspectives in Saccharomyces boulardii therapeutic applications.

Weaning - When is Your Baby's Digestive System Ready For Solid Foods?

According to the UK Health Promotion Agency, weaning before six months is not recommended. They remind us that most infants' digestive systems and kidneys are not sufficiently developed until six months.

Ideally weaning would begin at six months of age, although research shows that it's commonly started at four months.

Much will depend on the baby and the mum. When the time comes that a baby is too hungry to rely only on breastmilk or Formula, and requires frequent feeding (every 2 hours over a period of 5 days), it might be time to consider weaning. Excessive night waking and crying or irritability, due to hunger, may also be a sign that the baby is ready.

According to the UK Health Promotion Agency, weaning before six months is not recommended. They remind us that most infants' digestive systems and kidneys are not sufficiently developed until six months.

Ideally weaning would begin at six months of age, although research shows that it's commonly started at four months.

There are pros and cons to weaning early or late, as follows:

Weaning too early increases the risk of food allergies due to the immaturity of the digestive system. Early weaning may also cause the baby to gain too much weight, which is associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases later in life.

On the other hand, leaving weaning too late may mean that the baby will not get enough nutrients to support the development of the immune system, and may grow quite slowly. The baby also needs to learn to use the muscles of the mouth, which will help with speech, swallowing and the ability to chew harder foods.

Rather confusingly for the new mum, suggestions and opinions can vary as to the types of foods to use and the methods for weaning, but here are some basic suggestions which are generally agreed upon:

  • Delay the introduction of citrus fruits, nuts and grains containing gluten (wheat, oats, barley and rye). After approximately 9-12 months, try oats, barley and rye. Only if these are OK, introduce wheat if desired. Even better, leave wheat as long as possible.

  • Avoid cows milk until 12 months or later. A good alternative Formula feed is called "Nanny Goat". Goats milk has smaller protein molecules, so is easier to digest. Sheeps milk is best of all but doesn't taste so good.

  • Avoid peanuts for as long as possible (some authorities recommend at least 7 years) (peanuts are legumes, not nuts)

  • Avoid sugar and added salt (the immature kidneys cannot deal with excessive salt)

There are various good books with plenty of healthy suggestions as to what to feed your baby, and to help you out of any confusion you may understandably feel as to the when, what and how of weaning. I like "What to Feed Your Baby" by Suzannah Olivier, who is a trained nutritional therapist, but you'll find others in any good bookshop.

How To Get Rid Of Diarrhea Fast

Diarrhea is a lot of different things. It is painful, embarrassing, and just annoying to deal with. If you are someone who is currently afflicted with diarrhea, then do not worry, because here are some tips that will help you cope with it and some more tips to help you prevent it in the future.

The first thing you need to do to cope with it is to go to the bathroom the minute you feel like you may have to go. The reason to do this is because trying to hold it is one of the biggest reasons why so many people end up trying to dash to the bathroom. It just helps you save face and embarrassment by going right when you need to. It also helps get it out of the way so you do not have to deal with it for a while.

You also need to be sure to avoid spicy foods, or just any food that has the potential to set off a diarrhetic episode. This is just another good way to keep your problem in check in a manageable way. You need to also keep in mind to avoid dairy products if you are lactose intolerant. This goes without saying, but many who are lactose intolerant ignore their condition and suffer through it. It is best to just eat foods with dairy substitutes. You also need to be sure to keep pressure off of your stomach, especially after eating. This can set off your problem, and it is important to just be careful.

How Enzyme Deficiency and Digestive Dysfunction Affect Overall Health

Enzymes are basically essential in the existence of an organism. Within the human body, these protein molecules play two major roles: to facilitate the chemical reactions all throughout the body and to breakdown food components in order for the nutrients to be easily absorbed by the body.

However, when the body is not able to produce or accumulate a good amount of enzymes to carry out the tasks, imbalances are likely to occur, resulting to various illnesses. Enzymes are very specific and work on a lock and key mechanism. Meaning, a particular enzyme can only work on a specific food component. For example, the digestive enzyme amylase only breaks down carbohydrates while the enzyme lactase only breaks down lactose.

The body needs various nutrients and these are provided by the food eaten. And in order to harvest the various nutrients from food, the body must be equipped with the right amount and types of enzymes needed to digest the food. However, when the body is enzyme deficient, the nutrients cannot be properly absorbed by the body. At the same time, the body will have intolerance for certain dietary components, resulting to diseases.

Suffice it to say, in order to maintain the balance of chemicals within the body as well as the proper functions of the glands and organ, the G.I tract and all its components must be able to perform well. Not only is the physical aspect of the human body is affected by the process of digestion but the mental and emotional aspects as well.

One very important chemical in human body that relies on proper digestion is the brain's neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are responsible regulating brain function, relaying communication from nerve to nerve within and outside the brain. They are responsible for sending messages from the nerves to every muscle and organ within the body. Thus, neurotransmission affects the overall functioning of the body, including mood, pain, hormone regulation, metabolism, and digestion.

So how can one maintain the balance? It can be achieved by helping the body come up with the right amount of enzymes to help with the digestion and absorption of nutrients needed to fuel neurotransmission. To comprehend the correlation, one must take into consideration the amino acids.

Amino acids serve as the building blocks of all proteins and hormones while also acting as essential neurotransmitters throughout the body. Amino acids are derived from dietary protein. And in order to harvest these vital elements, enzymes are needed to cleave proteins derived from food. If the enzymes are insufficient and these proteins are not properly digested, the body will then experience imbalances in the neurotransmitters and hormones.

However, enzyme and nutrition deficiency is only one of the various causes of the imbalances in the neurotransmitters. Other factors include neurotoxicity and drugs. A way to address this concern is by taking supplemental enzymes and amino acids, detoxification, and sticking to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Still, diagnosis by and consultation with health professionals are highly recommended.

Tips to Healthy Firm Cat and Dog Stool

Runny stools or diarrhea are one of the most common problems seen in our pets. Digestive disorders can be a result of a change in diet, food allergies, virus, overeating, toxic substances like garbage or rotten food, unknown objects, diseases like cancer, and parasites.

One of the most important things you can do for your pet to maintain firm cat and dog stools are to provide a healthy diet. Never feed your pet chocolates, spicy food, people food or milk. Make sure they have ample water and plenty of exercise to help keep his bowel movements regular and relieve stress.

If your dog or cat has diarrhea that is persistent or lasts more than a couple of days seek medical advice. Your pet can become dehydrated, or there could be a blockage which can be life threatening. Other signs to look for which would require immediate veterinarian services would be fever, pain, vomiting, blood in the diarrhea, lethargy, depression, weight Loss, dehydration and loss of appetite.

Treatment

If no cause has been found that requires medical treatment for your pet's runny stools or diarrhea you may want to introduce a raw diet. Cooked over processed food and pasteurized milk all can be detrimental to the health of our animals. Treating your pet for loose stools could be as simple as giving our pets the diet that they were designed to eat. Gradually introduce raw, unprocessed food in small amounts while reducing canned foods.

To help your pet maintain healthy firm cat and dog stools a homeopathic veterinarian might prescribe plantago major, alchemilla vulgaris or a combination of these and other herbs and botanical extracts. All of these are well-known tonics for treating and preventing digestive disorders.

Prevention & Maintenance

Runny stools or diarrhea is not a disease but a symptom of something else going on with the stomach or intestinal tract and there are many home remedies to help correct an irregular digestive problem, if no medical problem exists.

If you are now using a regular veterinarian, consider switching to a holistic vet. They are usually more aware of the stress that a vet visit causes an animal. They avoid over-immunizations and help you learn to support your pets' digestive system.

How to Increase Pancreas Function

If average individuals would be asked where their pancreas is located or the function of the pancreas, many of them would scratch their head. You might hear the vague answer "It is somewhere inside the stomach", "pancreas causes diabetes", "pancreatic cancer is an awful disease" and so on.

The pancreas is a vital organ for our body. People can survive without the stomach, small intestine and colon but not long without the pancreas. Life depends on this small gland, deeply hidden inside the abdomen cavity. The pancreas is an organ with dual tasks. Most individuals are only aware about the role of the pancreas in sugar metabolism and that pancreas produces insulin, the vital hormone to prevent diabetes.

The second function of the pancreas is producing digestive enzymes - powerful proteins that split food we eat into particles small enough to travel through the intestinal wall so that we can digest and assimilate this food.

Only by using our pancreatic digestive enzymes, we can transform our food into the energy and make our own cells. Without pancreatic digestive enzymes we could not live. The function of many organs and systems and the whole body's health, strongly depend upon the health of our digestive system and especially our pancreas.

What is happened if pancreas produces low amount or not good quality of digestive enzymes?

Our digestive system is long muscular tube, stretching from the mouth to the anus. Pancreas releases pancreatic juice filled with digestive enzymes into the duodenum - the first part of the small intestine. Small intestine is the most important place for digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. There also place for vitamins and minerals to get into our system.

Without proper amount of pancreatic enzymes indigested food fermented, spoiled, rot by intestinal micro organisms and irritates the intestinal walls. To get rid of this waste our body has just two openings: mouth and anus.

Ask anyone around and almost everyone has some sort of unpleasant GI symptoms: gas, abdominal distention, belching, heartburn, abdominal cramps, pains, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea/constipation, and so on. These are symptoms of indigestion and have strong correlation with low pancreatic function.

Most human diseases depend on two big problems:

1. The deficiency of vital substances in the body such as water, proteins, minerals, trace elements, vitamins and so on: As your car without gasoline would stop moving, so will the deficiency of the vital nutrients stop the organs from performing their proper tasks.

2. Toxicity (chemical or biological): Toxicity literally kills the cells and harmfully influences the body's metabolism causing inflammation, pain, cancer development and so on.

These two factors are directly related to pancreatic health.

The pancreas is a hard worker. It produces normally almost 60-85 oz of a clear, colorless, alkaline fluid. This is pancreatic juice, which consists of very important ingredients for digestion such as water, minerals, proteins, bicarbonates and enzymes.

Non-processed, natural, whole food consists of plenty of digestive enzymes. Lack of these enzymes in the modern foods causes huge effort for pancreas to manufacture its digestive enzymes. Therefore, many modern people have large pancreases.

Chemicals such as preservatives, colorings, additives, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides in the processed food are not healthy for pancreas. The worst enemy for pancreas is also alcohol. Alcoholic pancreatititis; inflammation of this gland caused by alcohol is the most common pancreatic disorder.

So, how to increase pancreas function naturally? By common sense, we need to supply the body with natural digestive enzymes from food. Pancreas is alkaline gland hence our food has to be alkaline with sufficient amount of the minerals, bicarbonates and vitamins for proper manufacturing of pancreatic digestive enzymes and appropriate alkaline environment to work.

Any actions to decrease inner toxicity such as drinking water, healing mineral water, herbal teas, juices and blends, colon hydrotherapy, massage, infrared sauna, controlling constipation, reestablishing friendly intestinal flora, etc., may help to cleanse the pancreas.

Europeans widely practice vacation in healthy mineral spas. Healthy foods, drinking healing mineral water, massage, colonics, and exercises improve health of thousands people in Europe and another countries.

Balneotherapy (healing with mineral water) is known science in European medical schools so many European doctors recommend their patients with chronic pancreatic disorders healing mineral spas.

The most known drinking healing mineral water is from the Karlovy Vary resort in the Czech Republic - the spa pearl of Europe. The Czech town of Karlovy Vary has been a famous international healing mineral water resort since 18 century. Europeans call the town's mineral water "healing gift from the earth" or the "miracle mineral water." Guests from Europe and Asia took a trip to Karlovy Vary for one to six month stays to drink the Karlovy Vary Healing Mineral Water (KVHMW) for different chronic health conditions, cleansing and detoxification.

Hundreds years this healing mineral water was distributed all over the Europe by bottles and barrels until in 1764, a method was discovered that made it possible to vaporize the water and make mineral salt. Czech doctors find out that the mineral water produced from the genuine Karlovy Vary thermal spring salt had the same healing properties as at the spring.

From that time on, people who could not travel to Karlovy Vary could undergo or continue the treatment at home.

A lot of scientific studies were done by European doctors to verify the healing action of the Karlovy Vary healing mineral water on pancreatic health by:

• Supplying essential minerals and microelements for the manufacturing of digestive enzymes

• Supplying bicarbonates, the main ingredient of pancreatic juices (pancreatic enzymes can work only in an alkaline environment)

• Increasing secretion of pancreatic juices

• Increasing digestive activity of pancreatic enzymes

• Neutralizing high levels of gastric acid

• Opening the Sphincter of Oddi (this decreases pressure in the system, promotes secretion and elimination of pancreatic juices and decreases congestion)

Some spices and healing herbs have a long history of using in digestive disorders. They not only improve the taste of food, but help to digest this food without gas, abdominal distention, nausea, stomach pains, diarrhea or constipation and protect people from harmful parasites and microorganisms.

All pancreatic enzymes are proteins connected with minerals or trace elements. Very important for health of pancreas and whole digestive system is proper supply of magnesium, potassium, cobalt, sulfur, zinc. Lack of sufficient amount of these compounds in the modern foods requires their nutritional supplementation for proper production of the pancreatic digestive enzymes.

Normal pancreas function depends upon actions of some water and fat-soluble vitamins. From the other hand, low quality and low amount of the pancreatic enzymes diminish digestion of these vital nutrients causing vicious circle. Taking essential vitamins from foods or supplements is a very important step to normal digestive (pancreatic) health.

Human pancreas has a huge amount of the functional capacity. Real symptoms of the pancreatic failure such as chronic diarrhea with indigested fats and foul-smelling stool, losing weight and weakness occur when 90% of pancreatic function gone. Until that time, chronic indigestion is sign of low pancreatic function. Increasing pancreas function naturally without drugs is possible by supervision of the knowledgeable health professionals

Dog Health Depends on the Digestive System

Recently completed studies on dog health have identified the importance of using dog supplements to aid the canine digestive system. By first studying how contemporary life styles of pets and their owners relate to dog nutrition the these studies have shown that the digestive processes were the most vulnerable systems of the canine. This has been perpetuated by the further and further removal of the canine from their natural wild environment.

These drastic domesticated changes in both the life style and diet of the natural dog have removed critical components needed by their digestive system. Therefore to assure high-quality dog health the processes of the digestive system must be enabled with an effective dog supplement. The second phase of the study then focused on canine metabolism and what foods and nutrients were needed and missing from the normal dog diet. This body of research resulted in ingredients carefully selected not only for their individual benefits but also for their capacity to blend together to optimize and enhance their natural benefits to the canine digestive system.

The availability of legitimate research on canine health exists in the commercial dog food and agriculture livestock feed industries along with higher level educational institutions devoted to veterinarian science. Although one has to be careful to separate the "advertisements" from the research of the commercial dog food industry, they do process the financial resources to maintain the largest and most advanced labs in the world for Research and Development of food and nutritional products.

The agriculture feed industry also has extensive and extremely useful research in regards to animal digestion, and the research does apply to dogs. Research from the naturopathic and supplement industries was not completely ignored but since it is not based for the most part on genuine research or scientific data it was not relied on or trusted. For instance, the dog, is scientifically classified as a Carnivore, although, you can find on the internet these industries for the support of their products claim that dogs are Omnivores. This is obviously erroneous. In fact since their diet in the wild consisted almost entirely of meat their body evolved a digestive system very different than humans.

The difference starts in the mouth. Dog's saliva does not contain the enzyme amylase which the human uses to break down starches into sugars. Their stomach produces large amounts of acid which is 4 to 5 times strong than exist in the human stomach. The food stays in their stomach longer which facilitates the breakdown of animal proteins. One other significant difference is the length of the canine digestive tract which is actually 10 times shorter than that of humans. This means the food spends only about only one-third the time in the intestines as with humans. This dictates a dog food that is easily digestible allowing nutrients to be absorbed quickly in the short tract. The modern day commercial off-the-shelve dog foods which contain large amounts of grains (mainly corn) and fiber are not completely processed and simply pass through your dog without any nutritional benefit. Using a natural dog supplement that enhances the digestive system is therefore essential.

The diet of the wild carnivorous dog therefore consisted mainly of protein. Other than water, protein accounts for about 50 percent of a dog's body and is a necessary part of every cell. It is actually the amino acids supplied by the protein through their unique digestive system that is necessary for good dog health. High quality protein sources are essential in any dog supplement. Out of the 22 amino acids needed for healthy organs, muscle, bone, and hair 10 categorized as essential amino acids cannot be produced by the body and must be supplied. Excess proteins not consumed by these body functions generate more energy for the animal. The modern day grain based dog foods do not supply protein in the proper manner for assimilation of the amino acids.

Usually you can relatively easily find a commercial dog food that does supply the necessary vitamins and micro-nutrients that you pet need. Without understanding how your dog's digestive systems functions you cannot make the correct choices in determining the healthiest diet. That is why dog supplements should be targeted at the digestive system. With the life style and environment of the modern day dog becoming more and more removed from nature the canine digestive processes have a difficult time performing their natural functions. This results in a reduction in the dog's metabolism which has an overwhelming negative effect on their health.

Once the canine digestive system was understood the next phase of the research concentrated on what ingredients needed to be added via a dog supplement to enable a dog's digestive system to function properly when you replace their natural diet with the modern day diet of the domesticated pet. They should be from natural sources since scientific research is still too immature in the real benefits and effects of synthetic compounds on dog health. They also need to be selected not only for their individual contributions but how they work together in the unique canine digestive system.

Research has shown the following are some of the dog supplement ingredients that will help in maintaining an effective digestive system and promote good dog health.

Chia seeds possess the highest percentage of the omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids of any food and in the exact ratio that dogs need. They are a good source of B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and copper. The other major advantage is they contain powerful antioxidants that protect the essential fatty acids from oxidation. Therefore they do not require added vitamins to remain fresh.

Kelp also supplies fatty acids and is high in protein with all 21 amino acids.

For probiotics needed for beneficial bacteria yeast cultures, lactobacillus (acidophilus & casei), and bifidobacterium are needed. The dog supplement should guarantee living Equivalent of 10 billion Probiotics microorganisms per gram (2 billion probiotics microorganisms per dosage) 20 to 500 million viable cells at the time of purchase, not just at the time of manufacture.

For detoxification and parasite control calcium montmorillonite clays and diatomaceous earth are effective. Aspergillus (oryzae & niger) are good sources of enzymes Amylase, Protease, and Lipase.

Common Health Problems of the Great Dane

As sweet and wonderful as Great Danes are, like all breeds, they have their drawbacks. Their commonly short life span is first on the list. A high average is probably seven to eight years, although there are certainly exceptions to this. Many have been known to live from nine to twelve years. This is a question to ask when interviewing a breeder for a puppy. Obviously, their early deaths are due to some causes. Unfortunately, more than their share of health problems are found in this breed. Not all problems listed below are life-threatening, but seem to occur more often in Great Danes. Thyroid imbalance, cataracts and Von Willebrand's disease are some health issues that breeders are now also screening for. Ask the breeder which problems they test. Chances are they will never concern you, but it cannot hurt being aware of these health problems when considering a Dane for your family.

1. Von Willebrand's Disease

Von Willebrand's Disease (vWD) is an inherited disorder that prevents the blood from clotting. There are different grades of vWD that range from clear, to genetic carrier, to affected. Screening consists of a blood test which determines which grade the Dane will fall under.

2. Cataracts

There are many causes for cataracts in dogs, including injury, nutrition, congenital and genetic inheritance. We are mainly concerned with inherited cataracts here. Juvenile, or inherited, cataracts plague Great Danes. Sadly, not many breeders screen for cataracts as they cannot always be seen with the naked eye. There is not much data on this condition in Danes to draw any conclusions, as they may not live long enough for the cataract to ever bother them. Cataracts are found on the lens of the eye, the clear body behind the iris. Mostly, dilation of the iris is necessary to actually see the cataract. It is important that the eyes undergo a yearly examination by a certified ophthalmologist veterinarian. If the dog passes the CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) test, a number - valid for one year - is then issued to the dog.

3. Thyroid

Problems with the thyroid consist of an over or under-active thyroid. The correct function of the thyroid is essential, as it affects many aspects of the dog's health. A blood test will check the thyroid efficiency. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) will only certify dogs with a normal thyroid. If the thyroid is functioning abnormally, it often affects the skin condition and causes a dry, itchy skin with sparse hair growth. Autoimmune problems are common too, as well as causing sterility in the reproductive system.

4. Panosteitis

Panosteitis is an inflammation in the long bones of the leg, causing lameness. It is known to move from leg to leg and usually goes away on its own. Should the pain be severe, then a trip to the vet is a good idea. It is unknown what causes panosteitis. Most often, it shows between four and eight months of age and is usually gone by the time the dog turns two.

5. Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is what happens when the joint of the femur bone (the long thigh bone that joins the pelvis) does not fit comfortably into the socket of the pelvic bone. Mainly, this occurs due to the pelvic socket being too small to accommodate the femur joint. The dog experiences pain because they do not fit properly and arthritis often develops as a result. Fortunately, hip dysplasia is becoming rarer in the puppies of responsible breeders who regularly screen their dogs for this condition. Screening consists of a hip x-ray and certification by OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals). Unfortunately, many breeders to not check the hips of their dogs and it is they who still have a very high incidence of hip dysplasia in their puppies. Insist on both parents being screened for this condition.

6. Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy

Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HOD) affects youngsters during their fastest growth period, usually between four and ten months of age. It is a severe swelling and inflammation of the joints that causes immense pain for the puppy. Often the dog will just lie there and cry as the pain is so intense. Diagnosis occurs via x-ray and the cause is unknown. Be aware of HOD as many veterinarians do not recognize it when first presented with it. Treatment is usually successful if caught early and there are several treatment methods, the most important being pain control.

7. Wobblers Syndrome

A disease of the nervous system, Wobblers Syndrome is when the dog has problems with movement. When the vertebrae in the neck form abnormally, it creates pressure on the spinal cord. There are several degrees of severity. Some dogs live long, happy lives with the condition, while others are sadly euthanized while young. A loss of co-ordination in the hind legs is usually the first symptom. It looks as if the dog moves without understanding exactly where its hindquarters are. The problem is more severe when the dog falls over when making a turn. Sometimes, in very extreme cases, the front legs may also be affected. There is seldom pain involved with Wobblers Syndrome.

8. Bloat or Gastric Torsion

This condition is probably the most common cause of death in Great Danes. Studies have shown that at least twenty-five percent of the Great Dane population experiences bloat. Generally, bloat only occurs when the dog is five years or older. What actually causes bloat is still unknown. Many people believe that carefully monitoring what your Dane eats and drinks can help prevent it. Gas fills the stomach and the dog is unable to release it. Due to excess gas, the stomach will swell, eventually rotate on its axis and flip over. This is known as gastric torsion. When this happens, the nerves and blood vessels going to and from the stomach become blocked. The tissues that work due to these vessels will start to die and produce toxins which will, in turn, cause toxicity and shock in the entire animal. This very quickly leads to death. It is essential to get your dog to the veterinarian very quickly when this occurs. Sometimes, getting your dog to the surgery in time is not enough. Often, trauma of the experience is enough to cause heart failure.

In order to successfully treat this condition, the dog needs to first be stabilized prior to surgery. By inserting a stomach tube via the mouth, the trapped gas can escape. If the tube cannot be inserted due to time or blockage, then they will need to puncture the stomach directly so the gas can expel itself. Releasing the gas is the only way to stop the deadly effects of bloat and gastric torsion. Once the dog is stable and the surgical team decide it is safe to try surgery, the veterinarian will open the dog and do a procedure that will make sure the stomach can never torsion again, called a gastroplexy. Discuss this condition with your veterinarian before any incidence of bloat occurs, as there are several methods commonly performed. Do not be afraid to ask your veterinarian how familiar they are with performing a gastroplexy.

Should the stomach only be "tacked" then it is not a permanent solution. Within six months the tacking will be ineffective. There are more permanent methods of treating this condition. A future gastric torsion is now prevented. However, an episode of bloat will always be possible. Some breeders and owners are having a gastropexy performed on all bitches while sedated during sterilization, and on male dogs when they are x-rayed for hip dysplasia - as most veterinarians will use anaesthetic to make an exact x-ray photo. The peace of mind is worth it to them with the likelihood of bloat being so high.

9. Cardiomyopathy

Common in the breed is a condition called cardiomyopathy. This is a heart condition that does not usually affect a dog before three or four years of age. Symptoms that you might notice include a lack of interest in food, intermittent coughing, lack of energy, and an intolerance to exercise. Look out for swelling in the legs and retching, as sometimes the stomach and chest cavity will collect fluids. Unfortunately, once diagnosed, cardiomyopathy patients are given around three months to live.

10. Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma is the most common form of cancer found in this breed. Usually it affects the long bones in one of the legs. The first symptom is a swelling of the leg and limping. Osteosarcoma is mostly diagnosed by an x-ray. It is important to diagnose this condition before spreading (metastasis) of the cancer occurs. Treatment consists of amputating the limb. This is drastic, but Danes do well on three legs and run around as if they still had the amputated leg. Factoring into this decision will be the age and strength of your dog. Owners having experienced this condition and treatment almost unanimously have no regrets about doing so.

Due to the potential health risks in the Great Dane, responsible breeders will screen their dogs before making breeding decisions. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) evaluates and registers dogs for elbow and hip dysplasia, heart defects and thyroid function. The grade of hip will either be poor, good or excellent. They will also tell the owner if the dog is dysplastic. CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) will certify eyes once the dog passes an examination by a Board Certified Canine Ophthalmologist. Insist on evidence of these tests from the breeder to make sure conscientious breeding practices occur, and to know that your Dane is from good breeding stock.

Great Danes grow in one year what people grow in eighteen. During this period of growth, if anything goes wrong with the metabolism or assimilation of nutrients, it will most often show in the skeleton. Most of these problems are easily managed or prevented with proper nutrition. Ideally, a diet including all the elements for growth that is correctly balanced should effectively slow down this growth rate. Keeping in mind that all the above problems are overwhelming, there is no reason your Great Dane cannot live a long life free from any of them. Having a Dane does not always mean there will be problems!

Super Acidophilus - For Intestinal Health

"Super Acidophilus" would probably be the right name to appreciate the favorable effects of these bacteria on our health. What is acidophilus? Lactobacillus Acidophilus is a lactic acid producing bacteria which is a "probiotic" organism meaning it favors life. So, unlike many other pathogenic bacteria, acidophilus is beneficial to human health. Our intestines are a home to about 400 species of micro-organisms and not all are good or bad. There is an ecological balance maintained in our body that helps all these bacteria and yeast to sustain them. The function of acidophilus in human body is to absorb lactose form food and convert it into lactic acid thus facilitating digestion and overall health.

Now, about the availability of these bacteria, it is naturally present in our intestines, vagina and mouth. It is also naturally present in the intestines of the animals and in variety of food products like dairy products and meat especially fish. Acidophilus supplements are available in abundance in the market now in varying strengths and varieties. Sweet acidophilus milks and yogurts are also available. It is used in milk processing and preparing yogurts and as supplements for its various health benefits thus finding its place in most food stores.

What is acidophilus used for? Well, the best use of this lactic acid producing bacteria is its aid in human health. Why should we need these bacteria when it is already present in our body naturally? There are reasons like antibiotic intake, chlorinated water, junk food, stomach infections and more which cause a depletion of friendly bacteria in our body thus accelerating the growth of yeast and pathogenic bacteria instead. Taking acidophilus may help in keeping the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast under control thus helps in protecting our body against yeast infections, digestive disorders and bad breadth.

Antibiotics can destroy useful flora thus causing yeast to overgrow and cause infections like thrush, urinary tract infections and infections of the breast. Candida yeast can overgrow with antibiotics causing allergies, digestive disorders, loss of energy and urinary tract infection. Acidophilus is strong enough to combat this yeast generally and is thus suggested with the use of antibiotics. It may help reduce acne and produces essential B vitamins in the body. It can help relieve lactose intolerance as it produces lactase which checks lactose intolerance. Cultured milk containing acidophilus may be a good alternative for people who have difficulties digesting normal dairy products.

Acidophilus is also suggested to enhance general well being and immunity of the body. Acidophilus supplements are found in various forms like powder, tablets, suppositories, liquid and capsules. They vary in their strength and care should be taken while choosing the one that matches your individual need. It's important to read the instructions and check for "active" or "live" cultures. Heat, direct sunlight and excessive cold can destroy these bacteria.

In rare cases, these bacteria can excessively combine with saliva to digest foods thus producing plaque and releasing acid. Excessive acid released in one area can cause erosion of tooth enamel leading to tooth decay. It is best to consult your doctor if you experience any side effects though they are rarely reported. In special cases such as pregnancy, it is better to take consultation before starting any supplements. Overall, it is one of the best known bacteria which are essential for a healthy digestive system and overall health.

Massage For Digestive Disorders

We all know that massage is an excellent therapy for treating stress, for "unknotting" tight muscles, for relieving aches and pains, for easing stiffness and for helping us to sleep, but massage is also an excellent natural therapy for treating digestive orders.

Massage and Digestion

Have you ever felt "butterflies" in your stomach before an exam, meeting or surgical procedure? That all too common feeling of your stomach churning or doing flips? This is because stress has a tendency to attack our digestive system. Worry goes straight to our stomachs.

Stress and our busy lifestyles, which often don't give us chance to sit down and take our time over a meal, can lead to a whole range of digestive troubles and disorders. Add to that the fact that we often eat junk food, take-outs and wash it all down with a huge quantity of caffeine, and you've got a recipe for a digestive disaster!

So, how can massage help our digestive disorders?

Constipation - Constipation is no fun, and it can lead to bloating, headaches, skin problems and bad breath, as well as pain and discomfort. Massage can aid and improve digestion by stimulating peristalsis, the wave-like muscle contractions which move the food we have eaten through our digestive tract. This stimulation of natural peristalsis helps our digestive system to function efficiently and prevents us from becoming constipated.

Digestive enzymes - Digestive enzymes help us to break down the food that we eat so that our bodies can absorb and use essential nutrients. Massage encourages the body to release these enzymes, thus helping digestion and our overall health.

IBS - Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common digestive disorder which is characterized by abdominal bloating, cramps and either constipation or diarrhea. It is often triggered, or exacerbated, by stress, anxiety and tension, so massage therapy, which relieves stress and promotes a feeling of well-being, can be beneficial in improving symptoms. Massaging the affected area can also stimulate peristalsis, help remove blockages in the digestive tract and reduce bloating, gas and cramps.

Stress-related disorders - IBS is not the only digestive disorder which is related to stress. Stress, anxiety and a busy lifestyle can also lead to indigestion, heartburn, stomach ulcers and intestinal problems. General massage lowers our stress levels by causing the release of endorphins, the body's "feel-good" chemicals, and abdominal massage can relieve indigestion, abdominal pain and bloating. Back massage is also great for indigestion and gas.

Detox - Back massage and abdominal massage can assist with detoxification, when used with a detox program. The massage will have a cleansing effect on the digestive system by helping it to eliminate waste and toxins quickly and efficiently.

Slow Digestion - How To Improve Your Digestion System

Slow digestion is very dangerous to your healthy because it could lead to several health issues. This is particularly true because the majority of the common diseases such as colds and flu has been connected to unhealthy digestive system. Why is that so? Read on to find out.

With about 60% of the immune cells residing in the digestive tract, any imbalance in this part of your body is bound to throw your overall health out of balance because of compromised immune system.

So what does slow digestion have to do with the health of your gut? The truth is, if the food you eat is not properly digested, your body will not be able to absorb it or the vital nutrients in it; this could lead to nutrients deficiencies and other related ailments if it goes on for a long period.

Secondly, when food stays undigested in the bowel for a long time, it becomes a breeding ground for the harmful bacteria that cause colds, and flu, yeast infection and other illnesses. Chronic indigestion also causes constipation, bloating, gas, tiredness and allergic reactions.

Slow Digestion - Causes

The major cause of slow digestion is food. The era of fast foods is taking its toll on our digestive systems. Sugary foods, fries, burgers, and hydrogenated oils also known as trans-fats are the worst culprits behind unhealthy gut.

These unhealthy foods can stay undigested for hours and even when your body starts digesting them, the process takes ages and most often they are not completely broken down, thus hindering food absorption and the excretion of the unwanted waste matters.

Sedentary lifestyle is also another cause of slow digestion. We spend a lot of time on our butts these days - inactivity tends to slow down metabolism, which affects digestion negatively.

Slow Digestion - How Can You Solve the Problem and Improve Your Digestive System

Because poor diet is the major cause of this problem, the solution also starts with diet. Changing your diet to healthier foods such as fiber-rich vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts will alleviate slow digestion.

Dietary fibers stimulate the growth of the friendly bacteria, which break down the foods we eat. These fibers also called prebiotics help boost the rate of food absorption and promote bowel movement so that your body can get rid of waste efficiently.

You also need to be active in order to increase your body's metabolic rate - doing so will aid digestion and improve your digestive system as well as your general health.

Some of the foods that contain prebiotics are banana, raw onion, strawberry, garlic, cabbage, spinach, oat meal and kiwi fruit. Kiwi is one of the best prebiotic foods because it does not only contain soluble fibers, but is also rich in vital digestive enzymes and phenol. These unique contents work together to reverse slow digestion and boost digestive health.

However, most of these important nutrients are found in the skin of kiwi fruit and you need to eat at least 2 whole kiwi including the skin to really get the full benefits - kiwi skin doesn't actually taste good. So you may want to go for a quality prebiotic supplement.

The truth is, slow digestion can be prevented and can also be reversed; you just need to do the right things to get the right results.

Juice Fasting Will Improve Your Digestion

Juice fasting is not only good for your health, but also your body, by giving your digestive system a break so that it can go to work on detoxifying itself. But the only drawback to fasting is that it seems as though you're not taking in those nutrients which are very important to your body.

There are many diets to choose from online: the water diet, the lemonade diet, all are claiming spectacular results if you just follow their plan, and avoid certain foods, and then drink what they recommend, they're all different but all of them are hard to follow and even harder to stick with, and many of them have contradictory information.

But most of the more sensible diets recommend drinking lots of fluids to flush out your body to help start the detoxifying process. In fact, they recommend that you fast at least one day a week and drink only water. But hang on a minute why not try juices for fasting? And here's how to get started.

You should not drink vegetable juices for more than a week because your body needs protein it gets from meat, and cheese. But a week will do great things for your body such as give you clearer skin, shinier hair, and it will also detoxify your body. Drinking juices for fasting will give your body the much needed nutrients and vitamins, minerals and other trace elements that are essential to good health, by providing exactly what your body needs.

Buy your veggies as fresh as possible and buy them organic when possible, if you can't get organic then make sure you wash them good to remove all contaminants. Use your vegetables without peeling them first just put them straight into the juicer. Try a blend of kale, carrots and spinach; they are loaded with vitamins and beta-carotene which becomes vitamin A in the body.

Romaine lettuce and spinach are rich in bone-healthy vitamin K, trace elements of magnesium, calcium and maganese, folate which helps build the cells, potassium and vitamins B6 and B2, which is great stuff for your body and it all, comes in a bunch of green vegetables.

One of my favorite recipes for juice fasting is cucumber, parsley, celery and a tomato to get a lot of vitamin C.Cucumber adds a good light flavor, lots of juice and is also great for removing toxins. And if you find that your vegetable juices need a little bit of a sweet taste add an apple.

Try to make your juices for fasting just before you intend on drinking them, because some of the vitamins and nutrients are lost if you make them too far in advance. But if you have to make them in advance make sure to store them in a Tupperware or jar with a lid that seals tight and does not allow air in, a glass canning jar works great for this. And don't refrigerate your juice for more than three days.

Your Solar Plexus Chakra & Your Health - Gut Instincts & Digestive Problems

Do you trust your gut instincts? Can you just know when you should do something or when you should avoid something altogether?

In ancient medicinal systems, the gut was considered your lower source of intuition- hence the concept of a gut instinct.

For your third chakra, Manipura, it is all about that gut instinct and your digestive system.

It's location is clear enough- located in the solar plexus- between the bottom of the breastbone and the navel and its organs are those involved in all actions of digestion and excretion.

Accordingly, a balanced chakra will result in strong and steady digestion, ease and consistency of excretion as well as optimal functioning of the liver, pancreas, spleen, stomach, gallbladder and the organs of elimination.

There will be optimal absorption and integration of all nutrients from the food you put into your body when in balance. Because of these basic functions of the digestive system, we can also draw a correlating line from the Solar Plexus Chakra to that of energy production and the storage of that energy.

Food is the source of energy, right?

This chakra is incredibly straightforward, just like your stomach is when you're hungry. There is no ignoring a growling stomach.

Imbalances in this power center are also straightforward in the physical sense- digestive problems, stomach acid issues, ulcers, upset stomach, diabetes or even a tight, hard protruding belly or potbelly.

Less straightforward imbalances are seen as extreme mood swings, low or no energy, the need to manipulate others, feelings of powerlessness, apathy, lethargy or loss of determination or willpower.

As straightforward as the physical imbalances may be and as not straightforward as the emotional imbalances may be, this chakra is intimately associated with energy and power.

Let me take a small step back.

We know that food is the main source of our energy.

We eat the food. Our bodies digest, absorb, store the nutrients and eliminate the waste products.

What is one word that can describe all of the above processes?

I choose the word "Transformation."

Our food is transformed into something that can be used by our bodies for energy- so we can move, so we can think, so we can act and react.

Transformation could be used as a one word description of our Solar Plexus Chakra.

Combine this concept of transformation and relate it to the idea of power.

What are you capable of transforming when you are in balance? What are you capable of doing or being when you are in balance- when your capacity for transformation is optimal?

The easy answer- anything and everything.

When you are in balance in your third chakra, you have the power of transformation at your fingers. Anything is possible. Everything is possible because you have given yourself the energy source to do so and you have been able to step into your power because of that energy.

Does this make sense?

So how does it relate back to our health?

Simple. When you are in complete assurance that you are capable of anything, you tend to take positive steps forward to accomplish your goals.

You want to lose weight? No problem. You understand that you are capable of it.

You want to have a healthier relationship with food? Okay, that's possible. You can see that you are capable of addressing those underlying causes.

When you are in balance, you do not do things that will sabotage any positive steps you are taking in order to improve your health.

You don't blame yourself. You don't blame others. You step up and find it possible to do the things that need to be done.

Your body will tell you what it needs and when it needs it.

All you need to do is learn to trust your body and learn to trust yourself.

This chakra is all about learning to listen, learning to understand and then stepping into that understanding.

Your gut will tell you.

What Do Digestive Enzymes Do?

You might be wondering, as the next person does, what do digestive enzymes do. Probably you have been hearing so many good things about enzymes nowadays. Enzyme supplements are gaining a huge following, indeed. But why? What do digestive enzymes do to merit such?

Well, enzymes for digestion, for one thing, process the food that you eat. These enzymes, such as amylase, lipase, and protease, are necessary in the complete digestion of carbohydrates and sugars, fat, and proteins, respectively. The enzymes specifically break down these foods into smaller particles so they can be more easily absorbed by the body.

But this does not eliminate the need to chew your food thoroughly. A lot of people take this for granted, without realizing that it is the act of chewing that starts the digestive process. Chewing your food requires saliva, and saliva, besides having plenty of beneficial enzymes, propels the food down into the digestive system. Aside from that, chewing already breaks the food so the digestive system will no longer have as much difficulty absorbing them. The digestive system will not require the pancreas to work double in producing twice as much digestive enzymes as necessary to break the food down. If you overwork your pancreas every single day, the time will come when it will lose its effectiveness, and many disorders, diabetes and pancreatitis included, can happen as a result.

Needless to say, digestive enzymes ensure the complete digestion of carbohydrates, fat, and proteins, is necessary in order to prevent stomach discomforts, such as bloating, feeling of fullness, constipation, and diarrhea. At the same time, it also keeps the colon clean. And if there is one thing you absolutely have to avoid it is a clogged colon. Besides it not being a good indication of a healthy digestive system, it can lead to more health problems that can be debilitating and fatal in many cases. Colon cancer can in fact result from a clogged colon.

Having two or three bowel movements a day keeps the colon clean, but your stools have to be well-formed, not watery; they should not be hard, either. And they must not come with a pungent odor. Stools that stink mean that there are foods that have not been digested completely. This may suggest the presence of toxins still in your system, and these toxins can wreak havoc to your other organs.

Stinking stools are not normal, and this should prompt you to look further into the reason why. Start with how you eat and what you eat. Are you a fast eater? Do you tend to swallow big chunks of food instead of sitting down at table for thirty minutes at least in order to have a proper meal? And what is your diet composed of? Are you fond of eating processed foods? Well, the sad thing is, there are no enzymes that process foods with preservatives and chemical additives.

And now that you know what do digestive enzymes do, having sufficient enzymes for digestion, along with the right diet, must be your priority.

10 Health Benefits of Black Tea

Black Tea is made from the same plant as green tea and white tea.  Black tea doesn't mean tea without milk, and white tea doesn't mean tea with milk.  The difference is the way the tea leaves are processed after picking.  Green and white teas are hardly processed at all, whereas black tea is fully oxidized.

Here are 10 health benefits of drinking black tea:

1. Studies continue to show that tea is very good for you, and has some amazing health properties that cannot be ignored.

2. Black teas contain antioxidants which prevent the damage caused by free radicals which can lead to numerous diseases.

3. Drinking black teas can help to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as it helps to expand the arteries, which increases blood flow to the heart.

4. Research has shown the black tea can be used in the fight against cancer.  Properties of the tea slow down the growth of cancerous cells without destroying healthy cells.

5. Tea is also believed to help to delay the aging process.  Nowadays there are many anti aging creams and lotions that contain tea extracts to help the skin look younger.

6. Drinking black tea can help to burn fat and speed up metabolism.  This makes it an ideal drink for those who are looking to lose weight, or who exercise regularly.

7. Drinking tea such as black and green tea helps to reduce bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol

8. Tea contains fluoride, which can help to prevent tooth decay by strengthening tooth enamel.

9. For those people with diabetes, drinking tea can help to decrease glucose levels, which can reduce the risk of cataracts, and other conditions brought about by diabetes.

10. Investigations have shown that the benefits of black tea are lessened when milk is added.   So, in order to take advantage of the amazing health benefits of this tea, it's recommended that you don't take your tea with milk or sugar.

There are so many different loose teas to choose from that you won't get bored. As well as black, why not try white and green tea? Many people don't make these sorts of teas properly, which is why some people don't like loose tea.  By using a tea machine, you can ensure that you are getting the water temperature and the steeping time right, you can be reassured that you are getting the health benefits of black tea.

Drinking just 3-5 cups of black tea daily can bring about all these health benefits.  If you drink tea already, why not change to black or green tea, and see if that improves your health and well being.   By starting to drink black, green or white tea today, eating healthily, and getting regular exercise, you can dramatically reduce the risks of serious medical conditions. If you're not currently a tea drinker, what are you waiting for?

Men's Health - Important Reasons Why Mens Health Should be Taken Seriously

Mens health is an important issue facing everyone today, not just men. It becomes increasingly important for men to take an active role in their health as they age, as the older your are the more illness prone you become. The first step is to know that you're at risk, that way you know what to look for. From heart disease and stroke to cancer, some things are unavoidable no matter what you try to do to avoid them. Still, there are certain steps you can take to minimize your risk. Also, there are things you can do to catch potentially deadly illnesses (for example, prostate cancer) before they have a chance to develop into something that can't be treated.

The first step, as any doctor will tell you, is to exercise and eat a proper diet. Deep fried chicken wings and nachos are not items that a well balanced diet consists of, so try to eat more salads and lean protein. There are little substitutions you can make that can drastically improve mens health. The next time you go to the grocery store, instead of buying ground meat that is 15 percent fat choose a leaner version. It usually doesn't cost much more than an extra dollar or so per pound and it's well worth the health benefit. Also, instead of buying chicken that has the skin on it, choose the boneless, skinless kind. It's easier to cook and eat, plus you avoid a ton of extra calories and fat grams.

Obviously, exercising regularly is going to have a huge impact on mens health. Regular check ups by a doctor are also really important, as that's how you get screened for a lot of potential health problems. Additionally, if you currently smoke or use smokeless tobacco, you should definitely look into quitting. There are all kinds of programs that can help you kick the habit, including online and in person support groups and nicotine chewing gum and patches.

How to Improve Digestion and Improve Your Colon Health Too

Many people are searching for ways of improving digestion. Our digestive tract contains everything between the mouth and the rectum. Each section of the tract has different functions which it performs to aide digestion. Some of the steps to improving digestion are fairly simple, while others are more complex. Regardless of which steps you take, you will be on the road to improving digestion. Improving digestion helps your body to successfully utilize the food you eat. By improving digestion you receive the benefit of feeling better. There are many ways of improving digestion.

Eat a balanced diet. Make sure to eat from all 4 food groups. An easy way to ensure this is by following this little rule when shopping at the grocery try to stay out of the isles. The 'junk' food generally is found in the isles. Make sure to do most of your shopping along the edge of the store. If you think about your grocery, you will realize that the fruit, veggies, dairy, bakery, meat and poultry areas are generally located along the outer walls of the store. By shopping in these areas, you will be purchasing foods from the 4 food groups and will be able to easily plan balanced meals. Eating well helps your body to begin the process of improving digestion.

Make sure to eat slowly. Eating too fast may cause you to over-eat. By eating slowly and chewing adequately, you begin the process of digestion. When you eat, your saliva begins to mix with the food you eat and breaking it down. By eating slowly, you allow the saliva to have the time it needs to do its job. When you eat too quickly, the saliva does not get the chance to process the food as well as it is meant to. Thus working against your goal of improving digestion.

Limit the amount of sugar you consume. If you are shopping at the grocery the way that I have suggested above, you should have a limited amount of sugar in your diet. If not, then your diet may consist of too much sugar. Sugar can cause a LOT of problems for your digestive tract. Most people think of sugar as mainly affecting your blood sugar, however, it is a food source for yeast and bacteria. By limiting your sugar, you limit the amount of harmful yeast and bacteria that will be able to grow in your digestive tract. When yeast or harmful bacteria are over abundant, they negatively affect your ability to digest your food successfully.

Eat when you are hungry. Eating when you are hungry and not necessarily at 'set' times will help your ability to digest food. When you are hungry, your body will be able to release more enzymes into the stomach which will aide in digestion. When a person eats when they are not hungry, the stomach may not secrete as many digestive enzymes.

Pay attention to your body. It may be necessary for you to eliminate some foods due to allergies. If you believe that you have food allergies, it may be beneficial for you to eliminate certain foods and then slowly re-introduce them one at a time so that you can determine which foods, if any, are causing your problems. When you have food allergies, your body is not able to digest as well as it should. If you have constipation, bloating, diarrhoea, upset stomach after eating certain foods, you probably have an allergy.

Although this is not a complete list of ways of improving digestion, it should be able to help you get started. Improving digestion is definitely something that everyone should strive to do. By improving digestion you have nothing to lose except possibly some excess weight you wanted to get rid of. Regardless of your reasons for improving digestion in the end, you will feel better and THAT is definitely worth it!

Why a Good Digestive System is Important

The human digestive system is a complex series of organs and glands that processes food. In order to use the food we eat, our body has to break the food down into smaller molecules that it can process it also has to send out waste. Poor digestion has been a problem for all of us at one time or another.

Depending on the specific foods you eat, the lifestyle you live, and your physical and medical condition can determine and have a direct effect on the efficiency of your digestive abilities.

To properly digest your food, you need digestive enzymes. If you eat cooked and processed foods, you are using up your natural supply of digestive enzymes. So, as you age, digestion becomes more difficult for your body. It's proven that older people have lower quantities of natural digestive enzymes than younger people do. Digestion is an important process and key to excellent health. Good digestion can help speed up metabolism while poor digestion causes a sluggish metabolism and weight gain.

Overeating is a main cause of digestive problems. The body can only digest a certain amount of protein at one time. What isn't digested gets stored as waste and creates toxins. Too many different types food will require more enzymes than your body can produce at one time. This will lead to digestive problems.

Most people this if you don't finish chewing your food, it will just take longer to digest in the stomach. This isn't true. If you don't complete the chewing process your stomach enzymes cannot do their job. This makes it almost impossible for the intestinal enzymes to break down the food when it finally gets there.

Your teeth need to break down the food you eat, into a substance that your stomach and intestinal enzymes can then break down. Adding to this your saliva is full of digestive enzymes. Which these enzymes start the digestion of starches. One step has to be completed before and of the other steps can work.

Poor digestion leaves the body and the immune system in the same dilemma that poor nutrition does, a lack of nutritional factors that support immune functioning and the function of the entire body. This happens because a poor functioning digestive system has lost some of the ability to turn what's consumed into a form the body can use.

We're using up digestive enzymes faster than we used to and we have a limited amount of them. Processed food is a contributing factor. There are numerous symptoms like gas, bloating, belching, muscle pain, skin disorders, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea, and heartburn. An insufficient digestive system will take away enzymes from the immune system to operate as a result weakening the immune function. Poor digestive means increases the body's toxic load.

The average American diet does not contain enough live foods. As we age we also decrease our enzyme stores in our body, making digestion more difficult.

Nutrition to Help a Digestive Tract

Nutrition, nourishment or aliment is the supply of important nutrients from food to the cells and organisms - to support life.

Digestive system in the body breaks down the foods we eat, turning them into the nutrients that body needs. Neglecting digestive health might cause digestive problems and issues with absorbing those nutrients from food.

There are many simple things anyone can do to help a digestive tract like:

• Eating foods, high in fiber

• Limit foods, high in fats

• Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated

• Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol and caffeine

• Exercise regularly and

• Manage stress

When all the above is not enough, we can turn to nutrition to help a digestive system even more effectively. All the above (and following) also plays an important role in healthy weight loss or body weight maintenance.

Ginger herb - "Since low gastric motility has been associated with the digestive symptoms for which ginger is frequently used, if ginger improves the movement of food through the upper digestive tract in people with digestive problems, this could help to explain how it exerts its benefits," said Dr. Rebecca Chollet, a naturopathic doctor who practices in New Hampshire and Vermont. It can be taken as a tea (made by simmering cut ginger root in a covered pot), tincture, spice or in capsules.

Probiotics - Years ago, scientists discovered and proved that taking certain "friendly" bacteria could help clearing up digestive issues like eliminating gas, bloating, and indigestion. Later, new researches revealed different strains of beneficial bacteria role in optimal health, supporting important biological functions, including assisting with digestion, keeping other harmful bacteria at bay and stimulating the immune system. Probiotics are available and can be taken in capsule, liquid, powder, or tablet form.

Raw foods - Because they are rich in enzymes, necessary for the digestive system to work. Heating and processing foods causes enzymes to rapidly break down.

Some of the most common digestive enzyme supplements: Amylaze, Bromelain, HCL (Hydrocloric acid), Lactase, Lipase, Ox bile, Pancreatin, Papain, Pepsin, Protease.

Garlic and onion can also help to rid the body of specific food additives and the hormone estrogen.

Artichoke

We all know that bile production is vital to liver health. Artichoke has been shown in clinical trials to increase bile flow by 100% thirty minutes after consumption. Apples

We all know that apples contain pectin. What you may not know is that pectin binds to heavy metals in your body (especially in the colon) and allows them to be secreted from the body much more easily. This is ideal for your liver as it decreases the workload on this vital organ so it can concentrate on detoxify chemicals and other harmful toxins instead.

Why Anti-Acids May Not Be Good For Your Digestive System

People with acid reflux disease are often advised to take anti-acids. These are medications that work by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces. In turn, the GERD sufferer feels a sense of relief, since there is not enough acid to cause problems.

Yet, in reality, anti-acids only provide a temporary solution for acid reflux disease. In fact, if anti-acids are used for too long, they could actually make one's GERD worse. Why? Well, in order to digest food, you must have a suitable amount of acid in your stomach. Anti-acids cannot provide this, since their goal is to eliminate your stomach acid. However, in the long run this is not good because without stomach acid, the digestive system is unable to do its job.

After a while, you will begin to suffer with other problems. For instance, you may experience weight gain because your metabolism slows down. You may also become malnourished because the body is unable to absorb all of the nutrients in your food. And if you're malnourished, you become more susceptible to illnesses, anemia, tiredness and other problems associated with improper nutrition.

There's also the issue of your other organs, which become more taxed as undigested food remains floating around in your digestive system. Consequently, you may experience other difficulties including hormonal imbalances, gallstones, headaches and even hiatal hernias. And, if you are already experiencing health issues, undigested food just makes them worse because the body has to work that much harder.

So, if anti-acids cause all of these problems, what can a person do to lessen acid reflux symptoms? Surely, GERD sufferers can't be expected to sacrifice their long-term health for day-to-day comfort. Well, thanks to advances in holistic medicine, they may not have to.

Why would holistic medicine be a better choice? Well, holistic doctors don't actually treat GERD. They help you to increase your ability to digest your food naturally so that the flow is smoother and faster. If that happens then food does not tend to back up or rot and symptoms get better.

These approaches have grounding in both science and philosophy...approaches that have been used for thousands of years in other countries. So, you can be assured that if you did decide to go in that direction, you have a good chance of getting your problems taken care of.

However, don't go off anti-acids on your own, especially if they are prescribed through a physician. If you have acid reflux disease and you stop your medicine and decide to "tough it out" you can put your esophagus at serious risk. Let me be very clear. Always talk to your doctor first before taking or stopping any drug. However, if you get help form a holistic doctor and your symptoms improve then your medical doctor may be able to change your prescription.

Benefits of Enzyme Supplements

Enzymes are the biocatalysts which help in various catabolic reactions in the body that helps in making the organs and organ systems efficient. Most of the enzymes are related to digestion as most of the catabolic processes occur in the stomach itself. Therefore, the real time benefits of enzymes are seen after eating. As soon as you start eating, the enzymatic action begins. The enzymatic activity begins straight from your mouth where salivary amylase is the first enzyme that acts on food particles.

Raw foods contain various digestion enzymes which are helpful in the catabolic processes. But it is not advisable to eat too much of raw foods as these are not beneficial for body. Raw foods such as eggs, poultry and meat if had in access can lead to many other metabolic troubles which are quite hard to treat. Therefore, the right means through which you can easily regain lost enzymes of your body is by increasing the intake of enzyme supplements. The supplements help our immune as well as digestive systems and which is why less energy is required during catabolic activity and the overall health of body is preserved. Put is simpler way; enzyme supplements catabolically break the fat particles and increase the digestion of fat deposits. Therefore, enzyme supplements for digestion aid in the process of digestion and makes it simpler and easy for us to digest whatever we eat.

Popular Enzyme Supplements and Their Functions

Bromelain - One of the effective digestion enzymes help in reduction of muscular-skeletal injuries and rheumatism, besides minimizing the inflammation in arthritis.

Proteases - The enzyme supplement reduces the development of metastasis of cancerous tumors. The supplement also plays prominent role in reducing pain generated by cancerous tissues.

Amylases and Lipases - The enzyme supplement helps in the reduction of chances of artery disease and atherosclerosis.

There are some enzymes which increase the effect of certain class of drugs that could harm the body system. Hence, it is very important that you consult the physician before you take enzyme supplements.

Benefits of Enzymes: Quick Go Through

  • Helps in increasing the digestive activity and speeds up the process of digestion

  • Certain class of enzymes help in the thwarting cancer activity in the body cells

  • Helps in absorption of nutrients from the food

  • Helps in improving the functions of pancreas

Poor Dental Health May Point To Other Health Problems

Have you had your dentist ask you questions like, 'Are you snoring or sleeping bad?' or 'Do you suffer from halitosis no matter what you eat or do?' or 'Do you suffer from acidity?' Would be surprised if your dentist points you to a sleep apnea clinic rather than an invisalign? Do not because very often poor dental health is actually a pointer to other medical conditions that you might be suffering and not knowing about.

Mouth odor which is so terrible and everyone hates, could be the result of poor digestion, bad eating habits, gastroenteritis, and many other similar problems. High acidity also causes yellowing of teeth, plaque and even cavities. Snoring is another example where oral health points to underlying health problems - in this case it is respiratory disorders.

Recent studies show that even heart diseases could be detected through the analysis of the condition of your oral health. Tooth infections and abscesses can influence the immune system to such an extent that the heart would be affected as well. When there are acute and continuous recurring infections of the jaw bone in particular, it is often a pointer that the heart is under threat as well.

This is why it is important to visit your dentist at least every six months so you would not only ensure the health of your teeth but also your health overall. The dentist would be able to tell you whether what you are suffering from is owed to poor dental hygiene, poor eating habits or other ailments in the body that reflect in the oral health problems.

It is very important therefore that you maintain good oral health and take the trouble to immediately remedy any problem you find with your teeth or gums. Most people still suffer from dentist phobia and would do anything to postpone a visit. If you are among this bracket of people, please note that you are doing yourself a great disservice. You might be hiding some very serious medical condition.

There are a few things that you should always do to ensure that your teeth stay healthy and disease free.

1. Brush your teeth two to three times a day - generally the best habit is to brush immediately after a meal. However, brushing 2-3 times a day would suffice. Brushing usually helps to remove any remaining food particles from in-between teeth and also wash away any acidic remnants from the food you consumed.

2. Flossing is a must - flossing is once again a very important daily activity which you should never ignore. Flossing, like brushing would ensure that there are no shreds of food remaining in between the teeth, which would later decompose and create mouth odor.

3. Avoid sugary foods - as a general rule refined sugar is not recommended for good health. Generally speaking this creates acidity and gastric problems. When sugary matter remains on the teeth it weakens the enamel and causes cavities.

It is very important that you pay attention to the health of your teeth and mouth in general for neglecting this aspect may impact negatively the rest of your body.

Constipation - A Serious Health Concern

How often do you go to the bathroom and have a bowel movement?

I realize that this question may seem odd, but it the most basic sign of good digestive health. Over 95% of health problems start in the digestive system and constipation is certainly a culprit in many of these maladies.

Bowel movements should correlate to how many meals are eaten in a 24 hour period. If you eat three meals in a 24 hour period, you should have three bowel movements. If not, you are constipated. The statistics show that over 65% of the American Population is constipated.

There are two different theories related to constipation. They are the traditional Medical Opinion as well as the holistic opinion.

Traditional Medicine defines constipation as the passage of small amounts of hard dry stool. However it also states that we have different levels of metabolism and because of this we all experience different frequencies of elimination.

Holistic Medicine believes that you should have one elimination for every meal you eat each day. The holistic practitioner would tell you that the healthiest digestive system is one that absorbs food and nutrition at meals and eliminates the toxic waste 12 to 18 hours later. If the food stays in your system for more than 18 hours it putrefies, accumulates toxins which get absorbed into the bloodstream and contributes to numerous other health concerns.

If you are constipated there are several things that you can do to bring your body back into balance.

1) DRINK more water. Ideally you should drink one ounce of water for every pound of body weight each day. This will help rehydrate the digestive system.

2) Exercise Regularly. This will increase the blood flow which will assist with normal elimination.

3) Supplement with a good daily fiber product that consists of ground flax.

4) Lubricate your digestive system with Essential Fatty Acids like Flax, Borage and Fish Oils which make it easier to have an elimination.

The reason that Constipation is a serious health concern is that we absorb whatever is put in our digestive system. If your digestive system is blocked and filled with waste you will absorb that waste and put the burden on your liver, lungs, lymphatic system, blood, skin, colon and kidneys to assist in getting those toxins out of your body.

It is always a great idea to see a naturopathic medical practitioner who can suggest great supplements, reading materials and healthy alternatives when confronted with poor digestive health.

Basil Leaves - For Giving Ease To Cancer And Digestive Gas

Pizza-lovers from Boise to Brooklyn dust their slices with dried basil. Pasta mavens inhale plates of pasta al pesto, redolent with garlic and basil. Gardeners live for the first tomato of the season, drizzled with olive oil and garnished with homegrown, fresh-snipped basil. Whether it's used dried or fresh, basil's sharp aroma and spicy flavor pleasures the nose as well as the palate. When you treat yourself to basil, you may also be treating yourself to important health benefits. There arc substances in this herb that can help calm your stomach and even, researchers believe, play a role in preventing cancer.

Keeping Cells Healthy Against Cancer

• The research is still preliminary, but laboratory studies suggest that compounds found in basil may help disrupt the dangerous chain of events that can lead to the development of cancer.

• In one study, researchers in India spiked the food of a group of laboratory animals with basil extract, while animals in a second group were given only their usual diet. After 15 days, animals given the extract had higher levels of enzymes that are known to deactivate cancer-causing substances in the body.

• Basil's ability to prevent cancerous changes was linked not to one particular compound in the herb but instead to several compounds working together, the researchers speculate. While it's too soon to say whether basil will have the same beneficial effects in humans, it's certainly not too soon to put more of this flavorful herb on your menu.

A Digestive Aid

• The next time your stomach sends out a postprandial SOS, try sipping a cup of basil tea. This herb has a reputation for easing a variety of digestive disorders, especially gas.

• No one is sure exactly why basil appears to soothe stomach upsets. One possible explanation is a compound called eugenol. This compound, which is found in basil, has been shown to help ease muscle spasms. This could explain why basil appears to help ease gas and stomach cramps.

• To make a soothing basil tea, pour 4 cup of boiling water over 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried basil. Let the brew steep for 15 minutes, then strain and serve. People who frequently have gas may benefit by drinking 2 to 3 cups a day between meals.

• Exposing dried basil to heat, light, or air for long periods will cause many of the protective compounds to break down. To extract the most healing power, it's important to store basil in a cool, dark place, preferably in a glass or metal container.

The Benefits of Taking Digestive Enzyme Supplements

Enzymes are an important component in every function of the human brain. It is responsible for every processes and chemical reactions that occur in the body. It is crucial in the functions of the brain which in turn is crucial for the function of every organ, muscle, gland, nerve, and cell of the human body.

Enzymes break down the nutrients that are needed for rebuilding new cells, just as they are responsible for making synthesizing proteins and nutrients. All the enzymes function synergistically. Meaning, they work together. Therefore when there is a deficiency for certain enzyme, the whole body may suffer.

Digestive enzymes are particularly responsible for digesting the foods that are introduced to the body. The reason the human body needs to consume food is to gather the essential nutrients to fuel all bodily functions, processes, and activities. These include growth, learning, thinking, etc. And the only way for the body to absorb the nutrients from food and put them into good use is when enzymes are able to cleave the dietary components that contain these nutrients.

Suffice it to say, with the sufficient amount of enzymes, the body is able to perform in perfect shape and seldom would get sick, if not at all. However, the body has a limited capacity to produce enzymes. Upon birth, the body is typically able to produce the necessary enzymes to support life. However, as the infant grows the enzyme production also lessens.

That is why it is important to eat raw fruits and vegetables. These foods naturally contain digestive enzymes which can help with the diminishing capacity of the body to produce enzymes. But one might wonder why it is often emphasized that the fruits and vegetables be as raw as possible. This is because enzymes are destroyed when vegetables are cooked under moderate or high temperatures. They basically diminish at a dry-heat temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit and a wet-heat temperature of 118 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, traditional cooking or culinary procedures of most Eastern and Western countries basically require foods to be cooked. In addition, modern lifestyle includes fast food and substance abuse which further contributes to the lessening of the essential enzymes in the body, resulting to a number of disorders which not only include gastrointestinal problems and physical disabilities but also emotional and mental disorders. That is why it would be greatly beneficial for one to take supplementary enzymes.

Certain enzymes have been used clinically for many years and have no adverse side effects have been noted. Also, some may fear that by taking supplemental enzymes, their body may become too dependent on supplements and may stop producing the enzymes on its own. But taking supplemental plant or microbial enzymes is practically just like eating nutritious foods. But nevertheless, it is always best to consult with healthcare professionals which supplements would be best for you.
